Workshop on Contemporary Clarinet Music

The workshop is designed primarily for interested and inquisitive conservatory students, teachers and advanced youngsters.
Petra Stump and Heinz-Peter Linshalm want participants to develop an open-minded approach to new music with an interesting and wide-ranging repertory of music for clarinet, basset horn and bass clarinet.
Petra Stump und Heinz-Peter Linshalm are also the editors and concept behind the new clarinet book “CLARINET UPDATE – New music for young clarinet players”- published by Doblinger.

Focus
All types of clarinet, from e-flat to contrabass, have in recent decades gained in popularity and become an integral part of the contemporary music scene. Hardly any other wind instrument possesses such a vast scope of possibilities in respect to range of pitch, dynamics of tone production and modern performance techniques.
In addition to working on modern performance technique and becoming acquainted with important works of the 20th and 21st centuries there will be a special emphasis on the bass clarinet.

Details
The main emphasis will be on advanced new playing techniques including multiphonics, micropitches, circular breathing and new means of articulation, e.g. slap tongue, key clicks, flutter tongue, teeth-on-reed, vibratonor smorzato.
Finally, there will be activities centered around playing back recorded sounds, reading modern performance scores, and interpreting selected compositions.

CLARINET UPDATE – New music for young clarinet players

CLARINET UPDATE is a collection of easy contemporary pieces for clarinet to be used by modern clarinet pedagogues. The collection enables a creative approach to learning clarinet technique and opens the path to contemporary music. The collection also invites experimenting on the clarinet and makes improvisation seem fun and easy.
The accompanying CD supports the learning experience by helping to turn theory into successful practice.
